Boatbuilding

Boatbuilding is a long process in particular if you are building a one-off or without forms and templates.

This process can be divided into many phases:

  • The lofting phase, where you translate the drawings into scale 1:1 so that you can start cutting all the pieces. Often the designers can supply mylar templates plotted or cutted by computer in full sizeof the main sections.
  • Production of all pieces to be assembled, these can be made by hand or produced by CNC using Computer Assisted Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM)
  • Setting up and alignment of sections. The alignment is critical for the for the precision of the rest of the building process, always do this with great care.
  • Mount the longitudinal structure: keel, stringers, etc.. Also here precision is important, the outer surface of these elements is the basis for the shape of the hull.
  • Application of the layers taking care of the direction of the fibres. The structure is already designed to take care of longitudinal and transversal loads, hence the following layers are designed to take care of torsional loads. Meaning the fibers are oriented +/- 45° on the keel, followed by other 0° and 90° layers if necessary (in this case carbon and aramid fibre layers)
  • Fairing of the hull, this process requires a good eye and technique to achieve a smooth and correct surface.
  • Turning around the hull and starting working on the interior of the boat. Everything you can do before covering it with the deck should be done. Later it is much slower to do further work on the interior.
  • Mounting the deck panels on cleancut deck beams. Keep up precision as always. this will be the most visible part of the boat in the harbour.
  • Mounting the roof
  • Fairing and painting of all elements. This is very important to do it with care and with good products, the marine environment is very agressive.
  • Installation of instruments and hardware. Remember reinforcements around loaded hardware. If it is practical to mount some of these items at an earlier stage, do it.
  • Launch
  • Rigg instalation
  • Testing of all items and equipment.
